FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
What does your church preach?
Calvary Baptist Church is committed to preaching and proclaiming Jesus Christ as revealed in God’s inerrant, infallible Word, the Bible. First of all, we believe in the creation of all things by a holy, transcendent God. Furthermore, we believe in the thorough sinfulness of human beings who have rebelled against God. Finally, most importantly and above all, we believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the only hope of salvation for sinful mankind. Therefore, we preach the incarnation of Christ, His righteous life, sacrificial death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and promised return.
Does your church teach about Christian life?
First of all, God has saved sinners entirely by His grace. In other words, there is nothing we can do to contribute to our salvation. At the same time, we understand God expects His people to live obediently unto Him. This means God’s grace to save includes a transforming power to change our lives. Consequently, Christians should be delighted to live according to God’s laws. Therefore, we teach the Ten Commandments as the standard by which we ought to live, and we encourage Christians to serve God through His church.

What kind of worship service do you have?
Our worship is traditional in style when we gather. We don’t try to enhance our worship atmosphere. Because we are saved by grace, our focus is upon the One who saved us, Jesus Christ. Attempts to try to “improve” the worship experience suggests that we need something other than the truth of who Christ is and what He has done in order for us to worship Him. Therefore, we limit ourselves to worship God as the Bible instructs us. For this reason, our services focus upon gospel preaching. We also worship the Lord in prayer, singing and scripture reading.

What kind of music do you use?
Part of worship at Calvary Baptist Church is congregational singing of songs, hymns and spiritual songs. Some of these are translations from the Psalms, and others are songs written by Christians of various eras. We especially love those hymns which elevate our view of God and call us to worship Him with awe and wonder. As far as music itself, we most often use a piano for accompaniment. Occasionally, we will use a guitar for accompaniment or sing a cappella.

What does your church teach about prayer?
Prayer is a vital part of both our public worship and private devotion. Through prayer we respond to the God who has spoken to us in His Word. We ensure prayer is a regular part of our worship services, and our Wednesday evening service is primarily given to a time of corporate prayer. We also open our church facility in the early mornings on Mondays through Fridays for prayer and devotion.

Does your church minister to children?
We believe children need the Good News of Jesus Christ the same as any adult needs the gospel. For our church, teaching the gospel to children is a great priority… and privilege. We encourage parents to teach their children the truths of the Bible from an early age. We provide a church environment in which families can worship together. Our Sunday School is designed to support parents by providing further instruction. During our morning worship service, children sit with their families and are encouraged to participate in worshiping God. On Sunday evenings, our pastor provides a special story time for children prior to the Bible study. During Wednesday evening prayer meetings, the children have a class where they are encouraged to memorize scripture, the Ten Commandments, and biblical doctrines.

What does your church teach concerning Christian giving, tithes, and offerings?
Although our church does not “pass the plate” or take up an offering, we do believe in New Testament Christian offerings. We have a box hanging on the wall in the back of our main meeting hall (some call it the sanctuary), at the southwest corner of church. Members of our church place their weekly or monthly offerings in the box marked “church.” There is also a box marked for the “pastor,” as our pastor receives an agreed-upon housing allowance, however, his “salary” comes from love offerings from those whom the Lord has impressed upon those hearts to cheerfully give.
Visitors are under no obligation to give, but are encouraged to support the work of their own local church at home where they normally reside.
